INTERVIEW: Zamani Mbatha Talks Character on Isithembiso & More

We recently had a brief chat with TV Star Zamani Mbatha who plays a self-titled character of a first year mining engineer student on Mzansi Magic’s new Telenovela – Isithembo.

Zamani let us in on the day he auditioned, his biggest inspiration, being part of Isithembiso and more:

At a glance, who is Zamani Mbatha?
I am a 19 year old guy from Kwa-Mashu who has also struggled in my own right through life. The character I play on Isithembiso is slightly similar to who Zamani is in real life. It’s sometimes hard for me to differentiate between the two.

How did you prepare for your audition?

Preparing for the audition, I had to think about everything I’ve been through and channel the emotions to make sure that the script was interpreted to the best of my abilities.

I remember the day I did the audition, I was told to expect feedback later in the day. I have never prayed so much in my life before hahaha, I prayed even after I received the good news that I’ve made it to the second round of the auditions happening the next day. I kept going in for a series of auditions with the likes of Hamilton and so forth to make sure I was the perfect fit with the rest of the cast.

How is it like working with the cast of Isithembiso?

Working with the cast of Isithembiso is an amazing experience. I can see myself grow each and everyday under the watchful eye of the directors and talented actors who have been in the industry. I get to watch from behind the scenes and measure my performance by witnessing them first hand. The critique I get from them helps me become a better actor.

Looking at the performance industry, who inspires you the most?

My sister [Nomzamo Mbatha] is my biggest inspiration. I look up to her! Everything she puts her mind into, she achieves. The fact that she can switch from the ‘famous’ Nomzano Mbatha and be a sister that guides and teaches me about this industry makes me appreciate her even more.

How has the response from viewers been like?
The response from people has been great. For now I am going to fully focus on perfecting my craft on Isithembiso.

I am still young, I believe there are plenty of opportunities still headed my way following this acting début.

Catch Zamani Mbatha on the new thrilling telenovela Isithembiso, Monday – Thursdays at 19:30 only Mzansi Magic (DSTV Channel 161).
